Past Poems of the Month
Easter 1916 by Kate Ballance
They fought on O'Connell Street,
They fought to be free.
Intruders they had to beat,
At peace they could not be.
The city almost destroyed
Fighting lasted only a few days.
Some who fought were just boys.
They looked for brighter days.
They fought until they were broken,
They fought with hearts of stone.
By nightfall they lay starin'
Fuair siad bás ar san Saoirse na hÉireann.

Intruders they had to beat,
At peace they could not be.
The city almost destroyed

Some who fought were just boys.
They looked for brighter days.
They fought until they were broken,
They fought with hearts of stone.
By nightfall they lay starin'

The Box by Jessica Timlin
There sits a little box
In the little room upstairs
Hidden in the clutter
Of the tables and the chairs
Those day to day fixtures
Of a functional being
Where I put every file
That I don’t want people seeing
I fill it almost daily
But I never look inside
Its contents far too heavy
Best to leave them where they hide
Until one day it bursts;
And with that it’s giant load
Goes flying across the room
And everything shatters
And the floor can’t take the weight
Of every stick and every stone
That have escaped from their corner
Where I tried to hide them.
But once my hands stop shaking
I rise up from the floor
I get a bigger box
And I fill it as before.
There sits a little box
In the little room upstairs
Hidden in the clutter
Of the tables and the chairs
Those day to day fixtures
Of a functional being
Where I put every file
That I don’t want people seeing
I fill it almost daily
But I never look inside
Its contents far too heavy
Best to leave them where they hide
Until one day it bursts;
And with that it’s giant load
Goes flying across the room
And everything shatters
And the floor can’t take the weight
Of every stick and every stone
That have escaped from their corner
Where I tried to hide them.
But once my hands stop shaking
I rise up from the floor
I get a bigger box
And I fill it as before.
January's poem by Klavdia Wilson & Siomha Whelan
Although it’s cold and wet and dark,
It’s an opportunity to make a new start,
Resolutions are the best,
To put temptation to the test,
Crunching footsteps down the street,
The snow has turned to slush and sleet,
The stars are bright, the sky is deep,
2016 is a year to keep!
Although it’s cold and wet and dark,
It’s an opportunity to make a new start,
Resolutions are the best,
To put temptation to the test,
Crunching footsteps down the street,
The snow has turned to slush and sleet,
The stars are bright, the sky is deep,
2016 is a year to keep!
Light of the Winter Season by Edana Coyle in 1B
The days may be shorter,
The night may be so long,
But it’s time for fun and joy,
Time for poem and song.
Time for snow to fall,
Time to celebrate for a special reason,
Good tidings to one and all,
For the light of the winter season.
It is a special time of year,
The start of warm winter cheer,
Let the brilliant fire light,
See the stars, a beautiful sight.
The time for our Lord has started,
God bless everyone,
For the loving and warm hearted,
Light of the winter season may come.
Now hear the angel choir,
Rejoice in God’s love,
Let the light lift your spirits higher
And praise the Lord above.
The night may be so long,
But it’s time for fun and joy,
Time for poem and song.
Time for snow to fall,
Time to celebrate for a special reason,
Good tidings to one and all,
For the light of the winter season.
It is a special time of year,
The start of warm winter cheer,
Let the brilliant fire light,
See the stars, a beautiful sight.
The time for our Lord has started,

Rejoice in God’s love,
Let the light lift your spirits higher
And praise the Lord above.
October's poem by Caoimhe Hosford in 1A
The night was dark
And the moon was out
Shining brightly through the window
I woke with a start
As I heard the stairs creek
The hairs on the back of my neck stood up
As I heard the footsteps on the stairs
I realised it must be my brother
Going to bed
"Good night," I called, expecting an answer
But all I heard was a laugh
As it scuttled down the stairs
Shocked and scared I realised
I was supposed to be home alone
The night was dark
And the moon was out
Shining brightly through the window
I woke with a start
As I heard the stairs creek
The hairs on the back of my neck stood up
As I heard the footsteps on the stairs
I realised it must be my brother
Going to bed
"Good night," I called, expecting an answer
But all I heard was a laugh
As it scuttled down the stairs
Shocked and scared I realised
I was supposed to be home alone
Autumn Beginnings by Klavdia Wilson in 1C
It’s funny sometimes, how time can fly,
The summer months have gone right by,
And the autumn wind has now arrived,
And it’s the beginning of harvest time.
It’s strange that when you’re having fun,
How fast time can really run,
And before you know it, out of the blue,
Once again you must wake up early for school.
Meeting friends in the hallways,
Catching up after the summer break,
People you haven’t seen for long,
And also new people with whom you must get along.
Say goodbye to the summer heat,
And prepare the chill to meet,
And all the leaves to fall from the trees,
And the cold gusts and autumn breezes.
Autumn is a time to start anew,
On the first day in this year of school,
The summer's gone and autumn’s arrived,
Yes it's really funny how time flies.
The summer months have gone right by,
And the autumn wind has now arrived,
And it’s the beginning of harvest time.
It’s strange that when you’re having fun,
How fast time can really run,
And before you know it, out of the blue,
Once again you must wake up early for school.
